Clinical Deep-Dive

Over 50 Years of Proven Clinical Reliability

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) crowns have been the backbone of restorative dentistry worldwide for over five decades. They combine the fracture-proof yield strength of an underlying metal coping with the natural aesthetics of hand-layered dental porcelain on the exterior.

At Dental Specialities in Sarvodaya Enclave, we do not use old-fashioned hand-cast metal copings. Instead, we fabricate modern DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) computer-designed copings. A high-precision 3D laser fuses biocompatible medical-grade cobalt-chromium powder layer by layer according to your digital scan.

This eliminates casting shrinkage, ensuring a tight marginal seal against tooth decay. Skilled ceramicists then apply fine Vita feldspathic porcelain, creating realistic tooth anatomy and shades that blend naturally into your dental arch.

Why Choose This Care

Key Benefits & Clinical Advantages

Decades of Clinical Evidence

One of the most documented, predictable restorative materials with millions of successful placements worldwide.

High Compressive & Tensile Strength

The metal substructure easily absorbs heavy chewing loads, making it ideal for molars and multi-unit bridges.

Laser-Sintered DMLS Precision

Computerized laser sintering ensures sub-millimeter marginal seal and eliminates traditional casting bubbles.

Economical Value

Offers high-strength tooth protection at a budget-friendly price point compared to all-ceramic restorations.

Excellent For Multi-Unit Bridges

Metal framework rigidity prevents flexing across long spans where multiple back teeth are missing.

Custom Ceramic Shade Match

Layered with natural Vita porcelain to harmonize comfortably with surrounding natural teeth.

Candidate Suitability

Is This Treatment Right for You?

A comprehensive examination and digital scan confirms suitability. Here is our clinical guideline.

When This Treatment Is Recommended

  • Posterior molars requiring reliable fracture resistance after root canal treatment
  • Multi-unit fixed dental bridges restoring missing back teeth
  • Patients seeking high-quality, durable tooth protection on an accessible budget
  • Teeth with short clinical crowns requiring mechanical metal retention

When An Alternative May Be Indicated

  • High smile-line front teeth where maximum translucency is desired (Zirconia or E-Max Ceramic advised)
  • Patients with confirmed metal allergies or galvanic sensitivities
How It Works

Step-by-Step Clinical Process

Transparent, predictable steps so you feel fully informed and confident at every stage.

01

Tooth Preparation & Digital Impression

Shaping the tooth with a precise chamfer margin to accommodate both metal and porcelain layers.

02

DMLS Laser Sintering Framework

3D laser sintering the cobalt-chromium metal coping for a microscopic margin seal.

03

Ceramic Layering & Articulation

Hand-layering and glazing aesthetic porcelain to match your natural tooth shade.

04

Bite Check & Final Cementation

Checking articulation, ensuring perfect contact points, and permanently luting with glass ionomer cement.

How we plan your care

A clear process from consultation to review.

We use clinical assessment and digital planning to discuss the appropriate treatment—not patient result imagery.

1

Consult

We listen to your concerns and assess your oral health.

2

3D scan

iTero or CBCT imaging is used when it helps plan your care.

3

Digital plan

We explain appropriate options, stages and your treatment estimate.

4

Treatment & review

Care is monitored with planned check-ins and follow-up guidance.

Patient Inquiries

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, clinically honest answers to the questions our patients ask most often.

What is DMLS in metal ceramic crowns?+

DMLS stands for Direct Metal Laser Sintering. It is a cutting-edge 3D printing technology that uses a laser to melt metal alloy powder into the exact digital shape of your tooth, creating a far superior fit compared to old manual casting.

Can the porcelain chip off a PFM crown?+

While the metal base is unbreakable, the outer porcelain layer can occasionally chip if you bite down on very hard objects like bones or stones. With normal chewing, high-grade DMLS crowns last 10 to 15+ years.

Why do some PFM crowns show a black line near the gum?+

If gum tissue naturally recedes over many years, the very edge of the dark metal coping can become visible. For front teeth, we recommend all-ceramic or zirconia crowns to permanently avoid this.

How long will a metal ceramic crown last?+

With good brushing, flossing, and 6-month checkups, PFM crowns routinely last 10 to 15 years or longer.

Is the metal used safe for the body?+

Yes! We use strictly nickel-free, beryllium-free medical-grade cobalt-chromium alloys that are fully biocompatible and certified safe.
