Why Professional Scaling Is Essential for Lifelong Teeth & Gums

Even with meticulous daily brushing and flossing, saliva minerals combine with bacterial plaque to form calculus (tartar). Once plaque calcifies into calculus, it becomes physically bonded to your teeth and cannot be removed by home brushing.

If left undisturbed, calculus releases bacterial toxins that cause gingivitis (bleeding, swollen gums) and eventually progresses to periodontitis—irreversible bone loss around teeth that leads to loosening and tooth loss. Professional prophylaxis is your frontline defense against this progression.

At Dental Specialities in Sarvodaya Enclave, we perform gentle ultrasonic scaling using piezo-electric scalers. These micro-vibrate at 30,000 cycles per second with an acoustic water coolant to shatter calculus without scraping enamel. We follow this with air-polishing and fluoride varnish to leave your teeth super-slick and protected.

Patient Inquiries

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, clinically honest answers to the questions our patients ask most often.

Does dental scaling weaken teeth or make them loose?+

Absolutely not! This is a common myth. Scaling removes hardened tartar that was inflaming your gums. When heavy tartar is removed, teeth may feel slightly different at first, but scaling strengthens your teeth by saving the supporting bone.

Will scaling create gaps between my teeth?+

Scaling does not create gaps. In patients with heavy tartar buildup, the tartar was physically plugging the spaces between teeth while destroying the underlying bone. Once the infection is cleared, you simply see your natural anatomy.

Is the cleaning procedure painful?+

Most patients feel only a mild tickling or vibration sensation. If you have sensitive gums or receded roots, we apply a soothing topical numbing gel so you remain completely comfortable.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?+

For most people with healthy gums, twice a year (every 6 months) is the gold standard. If you have a history of gum disease or smoke, every 3 to 4 months may be advised.

Can I brush normally after the appointment?+

Yes! Continue your normal brushing and flossing routine. If your gums were slightly tender, using warm salt water rinses for 24 hours will soothe the tissue rapidly.
